NOTLD: reanimated (and really hard to watch)

Posted by Jimmy Blue Eyes on April 30, 2011 at 10:14 PM

Greetings my shambling shuffling friend!

A couple days ago I got my rotten cold fingers wrapped around a copy of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED (not to be confused with the upcoming Notld 3D: reanimated)

NOTLD: REANIMATED Directed by Mike Schneider, is a collaboration from over 100 cartoonist from around the globe each animating George Romero's classic, with everything from claymation, cgi and hand drawn cartooning, to puppetry and acrylics, then spliced all of these animation genre's together to create one movie.

I really wanted to like this movie, the concept is great, but it was too much.

I patiently sat like one of the dead and watched this film from beginning to end, and I liked some of the animation styles. But had I not seen this movie in it's original form about 20 times in my life, I would have been at a loss as to what was happening, my only guide being the familiar voices in the background dubbed over the animations.

Some of the animations were so abstract that they made no sense, and in truth looked on par to what you would expect of cartooning beginners.

I believe they should have not used the work of over 100 cartoonists, and instead used the best 4 or 5. They crammed in so much that the images were constantly changing and I felt like an epileptic having a seizure. This resulted in a very unsteady movie, that kids could not sit through with their short attention spans, (the changing styles would have overwhelmed their poor lil brains).

Some of the cartoonists actually did excellent work though, and I believe these were show cased during the trailer. My favorite artist actually drew the scene of the bodies being devoured in the burned out truck, the goriness of the zombies were superb!

So how would I rate this movie?

G.R.E.A.T. scale
G-ore
: I can't give this more than a 5, because some of the cartooning was just to avant garde.
R-ealism: it was a cartoon, and although the story in it's self is realistic the changing of the cartooning styles wrecked it. 4
E-ntertainment:
I felt like the monkey at the beginning of 28 Days later, forced to watch the multiple t.v. screens, had I been on a hallucenagenic drug it would have resulted in a horribly bad trip. 3
A-cting:
the original soundtrack and actors voices were great, but the cartooning was to far out there. 3.5
T-hrills: it was a thrill for the credits to roll, so the seizures would stop. 2

The combined G.R.E.A.T. score is 3.5

I dont really recommend this movie, but if you love to add to your collection like I do, you can find this movie at Amazon.com

So how badly do you want to have a flickering t.v. induced siezure?

You will have to watch NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED to find out.

Thanks for reading, and until my next post, I will be shuffling along with the lost.
